Lyrics to the hymn, Ah, Holy Jesus

Hello, hello, my friends, and welcome to the Mother of Gooses blog, where I ramble about whatever I want to ramble about at that particular time.

Today, I want to ramble about the hymn written by Johann Heermann in 1630, Ah Holy Jesus.

It is about how our sins were the reason Jesus was beaten, mocked and crucified.

Our sins were the reason Jesus died; He wants us to live in Heaven with Him when we die.

All we have to do is believe.

I don't have anything else to add, except that if you don't know how the hymn goes, look up Folksandhymns on YouTube; she has a very pretty voice, and she plays the guitar.

Now, on with the show!

Verse 1

Ah, Holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended?

That we to judge Thee have in hate pretended?

By foes derided, by Thine own rejected,

Oh most afflicted!

Verse 2

Who was the guilty?

Who brought this upon Thee?

Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone Thee!

'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied Thee;

I crucified Thee.

Verse 3

Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered;

The slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered.

For our atonement, while we nothing heeded,

God interceded.

Verse 4

For me, kind Jesus, was Thy incarnation,

Thy mortal sorrow, and Thy life's oblation;

Thy death of anguish, and Thy bitter passion,

For my salvation.

Verse 5

Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay Thee,

I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee;

Think on Thy pity, and Thy love unswerving,

Not my deserving.

Well, what do you think? Isn't nice?

The words are fairly simple, but the tune baffles me; I mean, I have the outline of it, but it confuses me.

Baffles, bewilders, confuses... There are so many words with the same meaning.

Well, that's it!  If there is a particular subject that you want me to cover, let me know down in the comments.

If you want to read more, go to past posts while you wait until Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, or a Random Chatty Day!

Goodbye, and God bless.
